Motor Starter: An introduction

The main function of a motor starter is to stop and start the motor to which it is connected. These are electromechanical switches like relays. Hand operated starter comprises of a lever on its side and can be turned off or on. Generally, these are used for smaller motors because they are incapable of operating remotely. 

This particular type of motor starters restarts the motor immediately after the interruption of power. This immediate operation of the motor after the failure of power might trigger the flow of dangerous currents into the motor and thus the motor will be damaged. This is one of the main reasons why starters are equipped with electrical switches. 

If you buy electrically operated starters, electromechanical relays are used to switch the power carrying conductors. These relays are also known as contractors. When the coil placed in the coil is energised, it generates an electromagnetic field that pulls the switch contacts.

And when the coil is de-energised, contacts are pulled back to their normal position by the arrangement of the spring. Generally, companies manufacturing motor starters provide push buttons, to stop and start it, for energising and de-energizing the coil so that the contacts can be operated. These electrically operated starters do not restart in case of power failure until the start button is pressed.
